Updates for Fall 2020

The Library is excited to have our students, faculty, and staff back on campus!

While this semester looks a little different, the Library is always here to help with all your research and study needs. See the section below for updates to our services. 

Service Updates:

Hours

Library Service Desk Hours (Fall 2020)

  • Sunday: noon - midnight
  • Monday-Thursday: 8 am-midnight
  • Friday: 8 am - 8 pm
  • Saturday: 10 am - 8 pm

Access to the collection space is available when the Service Desk is open. Holiday and break hours can be found here.


Building Access (Fall 2020)

To allow time for cleaning and disinfecting:

  • ARB Closure @ 10 pm: Every night the classroom wing of the ARB will be closed and cleared of people at 10 pm. Anyone wishing to stay in the building will need to move to the Library wing of the ARB.
  • Library Closure @ Midnight: The Library wing of the building will close at midnight. Anyone remaining in the building will be asked to leave and can return the next morning when the building reopens. 

Visitors

Due to COVID-19 mitigation measures, the library is currently limiting access to UHSP faculty, staff, and students only. 

Health and Safety Measures

Social Distancing & Frequent Cleaning

Library staff is following all state and college public health guidelines, including social distancing, wearing masks, frequent handwashing, sanitizing and disinfecting of workspaces and equipment, and self-monitoring for symptoms. 


Furniture Placement

Library seating has been reconfigured to add space between chairs and tables, and in some spaces, physical barriers have been added. No furniture may be moved or rearranged.


Face Coverings

Masks are required in all shared spaces including but not limited to classrooms, lounge spaces, business units, the library, and in student support offices.


Physical Distancing

Physical distancing will be prioritized as the main measure to reduce the spread of disease. Physical distancing (approximately 6 ft) should be practiced in all locations on campus, including hallways, stairwells, elevators, restrooms, residence halls, classrooms, meeting rooms, etc.

Printing and Scanning

1st Floor Printer Relocated

To ease congestion, the printer on the first floor of the Library has been moved to the Lower Level of the Collection Space (the area with the books). You can access the printer by using the Library elevator or the library back stairwell. 

The printer will only be accessible while the Library Service Desk is open. 


Color Printer

The color printer on the second floor of the library remains in the same location. You are able to print black and white pages on the color printer. For black and white print outs (and the cheaper price) make sure to select black and white in the print options before sending your print job to the color printer.


Printing via FedEx

The College has partnered with FedEx to create a printing solution students can utilize while off-campus. Students can submit print jobs online through FedEx and bill them to their student account.

All print job requests must be submitted online. FedEx is not accepting in-person orders for student accounts. Completed print jobs can be picked up in-store or they can be mailed directly to you.

Students should refer to email correspondence or contact library staff at Library@uhsp.edu for process questions and the student account code.

When students are ready to print, contact Jameka Holton at 314.780.5261 or Jameka.Holton@fedex.com for assistance in setting up a user name and password with FedEx.

Course Reserves

Print Course Reserves Suspended

Based on findings of the REALM (Reopening Archives, Libraries and Museums) Project, the Library will suspend checking out print course reserves this semester.  Print course reserves are typically high touch and high use books. The REALM Project found that the COVID-19 virus can survive up to 72 hours not only on the cover of books but also on plain paper pages inside a closed book. Quarantining print course reserves would not be practical.


DVDs on Course Reserve

We will continue to check out DVDs placed on reserve. DVD cases and DVDs will be cleaned and sanitized after each use. 


Anatomy Models

We will continue to check out anatomy models that fit in our new UV cabinet and sterilize them after every use. We will use a UV hand wand on larger models, and assess the workflow of this process.

Study Rooms

All Study Rooms are now reservation-only

To use a study room you and your study partner must book a reservation online through Microsoft Bookings. Rooms are now limited to no more than 2 students per room. 

At the start of your reservation, you need to stop at the Library Service Desk to check out the key for the room. When your reservation is over you will need to return the key to the Library Service Desk.  

All group study rooms are locked when not in use.

Reservation Process

  1. Go to the Library Study Rooms page in Microsoft Bookings
  2. Select a room to see available dates and times.
  3. Select the starting time for your three-hour reservation
  4. Enter your name, your UHSP email address, and the name of the person using the study room with you.
  5. You will receive a confirmation email at the time of booking and a reminder email 2 hours before your reservation.

You can reschedule or cancel your reservation any time using the link sent in your confirmation email.


Accessing Your Reserved Room

  1. At the start of your reservation time go to the Library Service Desk and show the staff your confirmation email.
  2. Library Staff will check out the key to your room for 3 hours. 
  3. At the end of your 3-hour reservation, you will need to...
    • Return the key to the Library Service Desk (fees will be charged to your student account if the key is late or lost)
    • Wipe down the table with cleaning supplies in the room. 

Study Rooms Policies

  • You can have one reservation per day. 
  • Only two people are allowed in a room at one time.
  • We need to know who has been in the room for health reasons.
  • Show up to use the room on time - If you need to cancel a reservation, use the link in the confirmation email to cancel.
  • Please be considerate and clean – Capped drinks and simple snack foods work the best.
  • Remember rooms are not soundproof so please keep conversations at a moderate level.
  • Before leaving the room please erase notes from the whiteboard, throw away all trash and double-check that you have not left anything behind.

Dry Erase Kits

We have several dry erase marker kits available for checkout at the Library Service Desk. These kits come with a variety of marker colors and an eraser and can be checked out for 3 hours.

Schedule an appointment with a Librarian

A research appointment is a 30-minute, customized, one-on-one research consultation session with a reference librarian. You will have the opportunity to discuss your topic in-depth with the librarian, who will offer suggestions for resources to help you in your research. The librarian will advise you on choosing appropriate research resources, picking search terms, and developing a search strategy.

Checking Out, Renewals, and Returns

Checking Out Materials

Library users may browse the collection for materials. Please leave all items that you've handled on the carts located in the Lower Level and Mezzanine. Any item you would like to check out should be brought to the Library Service Desk.

At checkout please do the following:
  • Hold your UHSP ID against the plexiglass barrier so the staff can enter your name into our system
  • Locate the library barcodes on items (usually on the outside back cover or last few pages of a book) so library staff can scan the barcodes.

Returning Items

Library Return in hallwayWe now have a dropbox for returning Library materials. The Library Return box is located down the hallway to the right of the Service Desk.

While the Service Desk is open return the following in the dropbox:
  • Books
  • DVDs
While the Service Desk is open return the following to the Desk:
  • Anatomy Models
  • Calculators
  • Dry erase kits
  • Laptop cords/HDMI cords
After the Service Desk is closed all materials should be placed in the Library Return box.

Renewing items

Books from our collection & MOBIUS can be renewed through your library account. You can find the link for "My Library Account" on the Library homepage under the Library Services heading. 

Two renewals are possible unless there is a hold on the item. If you need an item longer email Library@uhsp.edu.

Books checked out through Interlibrary Loan can only be renewed by emailing austin.case@uhsp.edu


Overdue Materials & Late Fees

Items checked out Pre-COVID:

Most items checked out were renewed until the fall semester begins (overdue notices from other libraries can be ignored). Please return all materials to the UHSP Library when classes resume. 

Fines have been suspended on these materials. 


Disinfecting Materials

Please don’t clean or disinfect print library materials. It may damage the materials, and it’s not necessary given the precautions our staff will be taking. Materials requested for pickup will be quarantined for a minimum of 72 hours before they are made available for you.

Requesting Books in MOBIUS

Books requested through MOBIUS may take longer than normal

At the start of the Fall semester, you may begin requesting books in MOBIUS. 

Since items requested in MOBIUS will take longer than normal to receive, please build in extra time when placing your requests.

To mitigate the spread of the virus, we are quarantining all incoming books for 72 hours (3 days) after they are received at the library. After the 3 day quarantine, we will email you that your MOBIUS books are on the hold shelf and are ready for pickup.

Please don’t clean or disinfect print library materials. It may damage the materials, and it’s not necessary given the precautions our staff will be taking. Materials requested for pickup will be quarantined for a minimum of 72 hours before they are made available for you.

Interlibrary Loan

Article Requests 

Articles requested through interlibrary loan should NOT be affected. You can expect to receive a PDF copy of your requested article by email within the normal time-frame (2-4 business days).


Book Requests

Due to COVID, we expect possible delays for books requested through interlibrary loan. It may take longer to get books from lending libraries depending on the COVID safety measures. Once a book arrives at UHSP, it will be quarantined for 72 hours before we notify you of its availability. 

Your checkout length will not be affected by the quarantine hold. However, keep in mind checkout lengths for interlibrary loan books vary greatly. To renew your interlibrary loan book, please email austin.case@uhsp.edu.
