How to Find a Book

Looking for a book? This guide can help you find a book in our Library, at other academic libraries in Missouri, and help you place an Interlibrary Loan request.

Searching the UHSP catalog

On the library page, select Library Catalog/Books from the search options

  1. Enter your search term in the box and click the Search button

  2. On the new page, you will see results from a keyword search for the term you entered in the search box. If the keyword search didn't bring back what you were looking for, use the keyword drop-down to search by...

    • Title: search for items that have your terms in the title

    • Author: search for items by a specific author

  3. On the results page, you will see a list of items that match your search. Under the underlined item title you will see the following information:

    • Location--where the item is located in the library

    • Call Number-- the alphanumeric number on the book spine or front cover

    • Status--availability of the item

  4. Click on the underlined item title to view more information about the book, including a summary, publication date, keywords, and subject headings for the item.

Not finding the right book?

You can always search MOBIUS. See the MOBIUS page for help.

Finding a Book

Let's find your book!

To find a book, you need to know the book's location, call number, and status. If the book has a status with a due date or a status of "Missing" the book will not be on the shelf in the Library.

Location

The map below will show you where the various collections in the UHSP Library are located. If you need help, you can always ask for help at the Library Services Desk.

Call Numberscall number organization

Basically, a call number is the location, or shelf address, for a book in the library.

Call numbers are part of the classification systems libraries use to organize books. We use the Library of Congress Classification (LC) system.

To see how books are shelved, take a look at the example on the right.

Finding the right shelf

Each row of shelves has an endcap sign listing the range of call numbers shelved in that row.

Using the example at the top of this page, we know that the book Plague: a very short introduction is located in the General Collection and the call number is RA 644 .P7 S653 2012.

Looking at the call numbers on the endcaps, we know that we can find the book Plague: a very short introduction in the RA 409 - RA 777 row.
